Plaza de Mayo is the main square in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. It is located in the area known as Microcentro, within the Monserrat district and is bordered by the Calles Bolívar, Hipólito Yrigoyen, Balcarce and Rivadavia Avenue. As the center of the Argentine capital, it has been the scene of some of the most important events in not only city but national history, such as the May Revolution which will give way to the independence of the United Provinces of Río de la Plata. On the occasion of the first anniversary of the revolution, in 1811, the Pirámide de Mayo was built, the first monument dedicated to the history of the country.
Below the square extend three stations of three different Buenos Aires metro lines: Plaza de Mayo (Line A), Catedral (Line D) and Bolívar (Line E).
Some of the most important civil and religious buildings in the city overlook the Plaza de Mayo: the Cabildo of Buenos Aires, the Casa Rosada (seat of the national government), the city cathedral, the seat of the city government and the Banco de la Nación Argentina.
